Sings: Video Monday, video Monday, it’s a Monday so here’s a video!

So for the past week I have been asking my viewers and readers to send in their questions about blogging or social media or marketing, anything like that, and I would answer them on a video post. So I got a few questions in, so lets just go through what a couple of them are, and maybe we can just answer them.

The first one came from Tim. He asks, “How do you get your teeth so white?”

That’s not really blogging related but thanks for noticing. That’s Arm & Hammer Extra Whitening.

Amy asked “Who would you rather do, Nite Owl or Green Lantern and why?”

That’s not really a blogging question, but Nite Owl and it’s obvious.

Ben asked, what’s with that song at the start of Video Monday posts?

I’m not entirely certain what you’re asking about there Ben, but stay tuned to the end of this video.

Kathy Gallant asked “Is it better to have a wide variety of readers or a loyal few?”

At least we got one question. That’s actually a really interesting question because it’s not really that easy to answer because you have a few different issues, benefits and problems with both of those scenarios. So I’d say, I mean your ideal situation is that you’d have a wide variety of people across all backgrounds liking you for a wide variety of reasons. That way if you do something different you’re not alienating everyone. You’re going to be able to have this large group of people who are always going to be interested.

Of course unless you’re doing something very generic that’s going to be hard to do. Doing anything that’s fairly niche or about a specific topic, you’re always going to have a passionate group of people who, as soon as you start to stray from that topic are going to feel a little alienated. So in that case I would suggest it’s better if you have a loyal group of people liking you for a specific reason that’s not about the fact that you’re a part of their same community of geography or it’s because you’re in the same industry they are.

Because as soon as you start to say, if you’re based in a small town and you start to try and attract readers, or you’re a business and you’re trying to attract attention from outside of that town, those people feel a little bit like they own you. They’re the ones that were your first customers, therefore what are you doing with those other people? And as soon as you start to draw your attention a little bit away from your core group of people, they’re going to be a little upset with that.

So I think if you’re really focusing and you’re trying to build a loyal readership or your business is trying to build a loyal customer base try to attract those people for a few specific things. About how you write your blog, what the story is, why people should come here, and don’t focus it on well I’m from such and such a place, or my industry is this specific thing. Because if you do as soon as you start to stray from that people, at least some people are going to get a little annoyed.

So have people reading your blog because they love your story, and that they can love it no matter where they’re from, no matter what they like, I think that’s going to be your best situation. So that’s Video Monday! Thanks everybody, bye.

I'm not really sure why you would do Nite Owl over green lantern. Are you talking about old nite owl or new night owl? Are you aware that Green Lantern is merely a title and that there are many female/plant/alien/squirrel green lanterns? So with them your choices are endless really. But i guess the newer Nite Owl is kind of a bitch for most of the book, so you could have power over him. Ah well.

As usual your readers missed the point entirely and didn't remark about what you were *actually* saying.

But then again you do have a small "loyal" following who does seems to think they own you.

Pander much?

Anon: Well, in their slight defense I did open myself up to this by mentioning that question in the post.

I guess there's a fine line between having fun and adding distraction from the point.

As well, you're right, most of my audience is from where I live, and therefore know me personally. As my audience grows and expands beyond this region, you'll see more comments about what I'm actually talking about, I think.

I hope :)
